Maa Tarini in black granite

Description: The Maa Tarini black granite stone statue exudes a divine aura, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship and spiritual significance. Carved from a single stone, the statue outline is written as Maa, ମାଁ, in the Odiya language.

the statue depicts the goddess with large almond-shaped eyes and a distinctive mark in the middle serving as an indication for her nose, adorned with a tilak. Her visage is gently tilted towards the right, adding a touch of grace to her divine countenance. The goddess is adorned with a magnificent peacock crown, symbolizing regality and the celestial connection with the revered peacock, the sacred bird of Hindu mythology. Around her neck rests an intricately crafted necklace, enhancing the overall aura of elegance and divinity. The stone texture and color amplify venerability with glints suggesting facets of Wisdom, Power, and Protection - attributes associated with the worshipped regional goddess. As devotional art, this monolithic image captures the eternal blessing and guidance of the Divine Mother manifested gracefully through skilled stone carving techniques practiced for centuries.

History- Goddess Tarini was originally worshipped in Kanchi. The priests of the Goddess belonged to the Kondh tribe ( checkout Kondh paintings). A few Kondh dehury (priests) families were brought to Puri to perform rituals when the Goddess was installed in Puri. A few of them were again brought to Ghatagaon (which means the village of the pot.) near Keonjhar, Odisha where the Goddess came to be installed.
